About the role
Woolworths South Africa is recruiting for its YES4Youth Learnership Programme, a structured 12 month work experience contract offered under the national Youth Employment Service, or YES, initiative. Woolworths, affectionately known across South Africa as "Woolies," is one of the country's most respected premium retail groups, spanning food, clothing, beauty, and homeware, and this learnership gives unemployed young people direct, paid exposure to that retail environment rather than a classroom only training experience.
The YES programme itself is a national initiative aimed at reducing youth unemployment by giving young South Africans their first meaningful year of workplace experience, something that remains one of the biggest barriers young jobseekers face when trying to enter the formal job market. Woolworths participates in this initiative across multiple store branches and distribution nodes nationally, spanning provinces including Gauteng, the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga, giving the programme genuinely national reach rather than being concentrated in one or two metro areas.
Over the 12 month placement, learners are exposed to a broad range of practical retail tasks. This includes maintaining visual merchandising standards, such as stocking shelves, checking product labels, tracking expiry dates in the food division, and arranging displays in line with Woolworths' brand standards. Learners also process transactions at point of sale terminals, handling cash and card payments and day end balancing procedures, and support inventory management within the stockroom, including unpacking bulk stock, scanning barcodes, running stock counts, and reporting discrepancies to help manage shrinkage. Throughout, learners are expected to observe strict workplace safety, shelf hygiene, and waste management standards in line with Occupational Health and Safety Act requirements, giving the programme a genuinely operational, not just observational, character.
To qualify, applicants need a completed Grade 12 or Matric certificate with a functional pass, and must be currently unemployed South African youth between 18 and 29 years old, in line with the strict age parameters of the national YES programme mandate. Beyond these baseline requirements, Woolworths looks for candidates who are reliable, comfortable working retail hours including weekends, and genuinely interested in building a foundation in retail operations, whether as a long term career direction or as a stepping stone into other work.
This programme is particularly well suited to matriculants who have not yet had the opportunity to gain formal workplace experience and want a paid, structured route into their first job, especially those interested specifically in retail, merchandising, or customer facing store operations as a starting point. Because Woolworths is a large, well known employer, a completed YES placement here also carries genuine weight on a young jobseeker's CV going forward, regardless of whether they continue with Woolworths specifically afterward.
Closing dates for this programme are staggered rather than fixed to a single date, since Woolworths processes YES4Youth applications as a rolling 2026/2027 intake across its many participating stores and distribution centres.
